Devlog 1: There is no game. I love you.
I love you all.

People have been shouting “wen more info!” at me about OCH (Onchain Heroes) for a while now so here’s the first installment of our devlog series, where we'll share more about the project and offer a peek at what happens behind-the-scenes of a crypto gaming startup.

But first, a bit about me:

  • 10+ years as a Software Engineer across various Web2 industries (payments, logistics, and mobile apps)
  • Crypto journey started in 2017, but truly dove in around late 2021 during the NFT bull run (Mekaverse, Hapebeast, DFK era)
  • Served as the lead developer at Wolf Game (a wildly successful P2E project) from late 2021 to early 2024

The Genesis

All heroes will be animated. Some can be augmented in-game via cosmetics 👀

I’ve always been a big fan of P2E gaming, particularly projects that showcase novel onchain mechanics, interesting game theory, and most importantly - RISK.

Many know that I was deeply involved in the Wolf Game community from the beginning, but I also watched other projects like Wizards and Dragons, Raid Party, and Crypto Valleys with great interest; observing both their rise and eventual challenges from the sidelines.

When Wolf Game transitioned to a Web2.5 architecture (off-chain gameplay with crypto-based rewards and trading), it made sense for the project at the time. However, I always wondered: What would have happened if Wolf Game had continued down the fully onchain path, emphasizing risk and game theory?

The question has been brewing in my mind for the last few years, and I believe now is the perfect moment for such a game to emerge - but with a crucial focus on sustainability and longevity (I'll elaborate on this in future posts).

The market has grown tired of farming points, trading questionable tokens, and playing games where insiders have an inherent advantage. My primary mission is simple: create an interesting gaming experience that harnesses crypto's strengths while avoiding its pitfalls.

What Onchain Heroes is (and what it isn’t)

Onchain Heroes is:

  • Not an autonomous worlds project (though I deeply admire and follow this space)
  • Not a memecoin project
  • Not a Web2.5 game
  • Not a Wolf Game fork (no stealing, sorry 😭)

While these all have their place, OCH aims to create something unique at their intersection - a game that leverages crypto infrastructure while maintaining mass appeal and, above all, delivering a fun experience.

At its core, OCH is an idle game where success depends not on controller skills, but on:

  • Strategic thinking
  • Decision-making with incomplete information (but importantly a level playing field)
  • Risk tolerance

OCH is targeting onchain enthusiasts who enjoy discovering the "meta" and being rewarded for their insights, rather than traditional gamers.

The vision is to create a game where most of the engagement happens outside the game client itself - in Discord discussions, group chats, and voice channels. I believe these social interactions create more engaging experiences than any standalone game mechanic.

To achieve this, we've designed a game with a simple game loop that revolves around player decisions. These choices are based on the player's risk tolerance and will affect in-game progression. Players must continuously evaluate risk-reward tradeoffs, with everyone starting on equal footing. Will you take the safe route or venture down the path of high risk and high reward?

All gameplay will be fully onchain, ensuring trustless and verifiable interactions - crucial when real value is at stake.

Next Steps

  1. Herolist/OG cutoff
  2. Whitepaper Launch
  3. Genesis Hero Mint followed closely by game launch (both on Abstract :2)
  4. ???

Final Thoughts

Anyone present during the P2E era of 2021 will tell you it was their most exciting time in NFTs and crypto. Our goal is to recapture that magic, but without the misaligned incentives, applying lessons learned about what works and what doesn't.

Our initial launch will be deliberately tight in scope. We're prioritizing the delivery of a well-executed and polished core game experience over a larger but poorly implemented one. In our next blog post, we'll provide more insight into our approach to product development and engineering.

If this resonates with you, join our Discord - we're still offering Herolist and OG roles through various events: https://discord.gg/onchainheroes
